Carpet or LVT for Spring?: Which Suits You?

Published on 14 February 2024 at 09:32

It is a long standing question in the world of interior design, and one that we at Galloway Flooring in Manchester try to answer for each customer who walks into our flooring showroom. In truth, both options are perfect for homes looking to put a bit of bounce in their spring - and we like to provide the best options in line with a customer's budget.

In asking the question of which is the better option, we like to ask some questions of our own to get a better sense of what you are looking to achieve. To help, we have provided some thinking points to get a better idea of which is the ideal flooring solution for you.

Whilst we are specialists in luxury vinyl flooring, our expertise also expands to carpets and laminate flooring so as to provide the very best in flooring alternatives. Here we focus on the two most dominant choices of carpet and LVT.

Let's Discuss the Space

The biggest dividing factor will come down to the space that you are looking to lay new flooring in. You will find it very rare for kitchens and bathrooms to be layered with carpets - and for good reason!

These areas require flooring that has a high moisture-resistance level due to the presence of water. Naturally, a carpet is unsuited to these environments as they can provide mould over time as well as easily soaking through to your subfloor, causing further damp damage.

For these rooms, we would recommend LVT due to it's very high resistance to water and condensation. LVT is also highly heat resistant, so any changes in temperature from a bath or shower will not cause your flooring to warp, bubble or discolour.

For living rooms and bedrooms, a carpet adds incredible comfort levels. You would have to consider if these areas are high traffic areas in the house to determine which flooring would be the most long lasting.

All About the Money

At Galloway Flooring in Denton, we understand how your budget will determine your options more than anything else, which is why we strive to provide options to any size budget.

With everyone having to scale back on luxuries in the 2020s, we have seen many people opt for carpet due to its cheaper price tag in most cases. The only downside is that when you factor in how many cleaning chemicals, carpet fresheners and stain removers throughout its lifespan, it can be quite expensive. Carpet may also require replacing after a minimum of 7 years in rooms with high foot traffic.

LVT, whilst varied in cost depending on the brand, amount required and complexity of the installation process, will last upwards of 25+ years if properly maintained - and all that would cost would be a regular sweep, vacuum and mop without expensive cleaning products.

Installation

We have to focus on the installation of both flooring types, as both can be fitted in a quick fashion - but would require professionals in some cases.

Carpets can be placed by yourslef if you have the time and patience and not require professional fitters, as can some of the simpler LVT products, as long as you have adequately prepared the subfloor. However, if the room is oddly shaped, or the LVT laying pattern is more complex or specialist, you will need a professional installer to perform it - which will mean additional costs.

All of these things you should consider before making your choice between carpets and luxury vinyl tile, and the staff at Galloway Flooring in Denton are available to answer any queries you have to be able to make an informed decision.
